We could not source a price for Virtuous, and we’re saying so rather than inventing one.
Why there’s no number here
Virtuous publishes two tiers and no figures. Platform is described as being for nonprofits raising up to $5M annually; Enterprise for those above it. Both carry a “Request Pricing” button. Every add-on — Raise, Momentum, Insights, Analytics, Volunteer — is quoted separately.
The directories don’t help. Capterra, SoftwareAdvice and GetApp all say “contact vendor.” Capterra and SoftwareAdvice still list three tiers where the vendor now shows two, which suggests their data is stale.
The figures you’ll find elsewhere — “$199/month,” “around $325/month” — appear only in roundup posts that cite each other and no primary source. We found no reviewer anywhere stating a dollar amount they actually paid. So we’re not printing a range. A number invented to fill a table is worse than an honest gap, because you’d budget against it.
What we can say from reviewers is directional: Virtuous sits above Bloomerang and DonorPerfect on price. One G2 reviewer’s phrasing is representative — costly for small organizations, but generally good.
What to ask for in the quote
Since you’re going into a negotiation without a reference point, make the vendor supply the structure:
- The all-in first-year total, including onboarding, not the subscription line.
- Which add-ons are needed for what you demoed. Onboarding demos routinely include modules that aren’t in the base platform.
- The renewal escalator — the percentage increase built into year two and three, in writing.
- Contract term and notice period for non-renewal.
Onboarding is mandatory and delivered either by Virtuous or an implementation partner. No figures for it are published anywhere either, so ask for it as a separate line rather than letting it disappear into a bundled total.
Where it genuinely fits
Virtuous’s argument is that donor journeys and marketing automation belong inside the CRM rather than in a separate email tool wired to it. That’s a real advantage for an organization that will actually build and maintain journeys — which means someone whose job includes it, not an aspiration.
If nobody owns marketing automation at your organization, you’ll pay for the differentiator and use the parts every cheaper system also has.
How the QuickBooks sync actually works
One-way, Virtuous to QuickBooks Online. Both granularities are supported and it is a single checkbox. By default each gift posts as a sales receipt, syncing roughly every three hours; tick “roll up gifts by project/fund” and it summarizes and syncs overnight instead.
Six things worth knowing before your finance team relies on it, all verified against Virtuous’s own documentation on 3 August 2026:
- No historical backfill. Only gifts entered after the integration is switched on are sent. Anything imported during your migration never reaches QuickBooks.
- One failure halts everything. If any transaction fails to sync, the integration pauses all transaction syncs until the error is resolved — and you cannot re-sync a single failed record, you fix the cause and re-sync the batch.
- The connection token expires after 100 days with no gifts synced and needs re-authorizing.
- Contact and individual custom fields cannot be mapped.
- Only donor-covered processing fees sync. Fees your organization absorbs never reach QuickBooks and have to be reconciled separately.
- It requires a dedicated admin service account without SSO or two-factor, which is a security trade-off worth raising with whoever owns your IT policy.
If your finance team wants journal entries rather than sales receipts, a paid third-party connector in the Virtuous marketplace produces them — implementation fee plus an annual subscription that scales with donation volume. That is a real cost to factor in if sales receipts do not suit your books.
Two things the integration chart gets wrong
Constant Contact. Virtuous documents the direction two different ways. Their integration chart says it is a one-way sync into Virtuous with historical data included. Their configuration article says the opposite on both counts — the sync pushes from Virtuous to Constant Contact, creating a list called “Virtuous” there, and there is no mechanism to bulk-sync existing contacts once activated. Email opens and clicks do not flow back. Trust the configuration article.
Salesforce is not an integration. Virtuous publishes a Salesforce-to-Virtuous mapping document, but it is filed under migration resources. A live connection would need the open API or a consultancy engagement.
One gating detail that is easy to misread: PayPal as a donation gateway requires Virtuous Raise, a separately priced add-on. It is not available through the CRM’s own Stripe-powered giving.
What reviewers consistently flag
Reporting and filtering get clunky outside the prebuilt criteria. Moves management for major-gift officer portfolios is described as difficult to do natively — worth testing hard if portfolios are your core work. Several reviewers describe the product as still maturing, with the development team working on fundamentals. And at least one reports migration fidelity problems, where conversion logic didn’t map incoming data as expected.
Strengths
- Marketing automation and donor journeys are native to the CRM rather than bolted on through an integration
- Unlimited users on both tiers, so access is never the thing you are rationing
- Events, workflow automation and reporting included in the base platform rather than sold as modules
Other options
- Not staffed to run automation? Journeys you never build are the most expensive feature in fundraising software. Buy the reporting you will open instead. Read our Bloomerang write-up →
- Need published pricing to get board approval? Flat tiers, published, no quote — you can budget three years out without a sales call. Read our DonorDock write-up →
- Running major-gift portfolios? Reviewers consistently name moves management as Virtuous's weakest area; if portfolios are your core work, test it hard. Read our Kindsight (iWave) write-up →
